Description:

This course will cover the theoretical, social, and legal implications of domestic violence. It will examine legal interventions and their impact on the lives of women and men who have been battered. It focuses on violence primarily against women and will involve a feminist and critical methodology. The course will review how domestic violence impacts the legal profession and its permeation into almost every field of law. Topics include the development of domestic violence law, civil and criminal remedies, domestic violence and children, domestic violence and women's economy, and federal laws, including immigration laws and international human rights laws affecting domestic violence. It also includes a comparative perspective by which the problem of gender-based violence and its remedies are considered in the context of other cultures and legal systems.
