Lawyering Lab: Scientific & Expert Testimony in Indigent Defense

Law 427

Writing Experience (WE)

This course is divided into two parts. The first four weeks are an intensified version of a course in scientific and expert testimony. We will meet for an additional hour during those weeks. Each of the remaining weeks will focus on a particular "hot topic" in scientific evidence. Depending on the week, we will explore scholarship, examine ongoing litigation and / or consider recent policy proposals. Where possible, the authors of the scholarship, pleadings, legislation, etc., will join the class in person or via Skype. On the whole, the goal of the class is to make us more intelligent consumers of scientific evidence, which in turn will sharpen the advocacy skills necessary for indigent defense representation.

Evidence and Criminal procedure (investigation and adjudicated) strongly preferred.
