This seminar will explore a variety of issues surrounding the U.S. pharmaceutical industry, ranging from the legal framework for drug approval and marketing to legal and ethical considerations of the industry’s role in and influence over the provision of health care. Topics may include the drug approval process, gender/racial issues in drug development, patient access to unapproved drugs (e.g., “compassionate use” and “Right to Try” legislation), “off-label” drug use, drug pricing and payment, and pharmaceutical marketing and fraud.

Will complement coverage in Biotechnology Life Sciences, Current Issues in Law Medicine, and Agricultural/Food Law Policy, but overlap will not be significant.

One of the health law survey courses may be helpful but is not required.
