NC Court of Appeals Judge Robert N. Hunter, Jr.

Court of Appeals

Fall; Spring; Summer

Judicial Clerkships

Legal Research & Analysis; Oral Advocacy; Writing for Litigation

Work Description

DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION: The Court of Appeals hears intermediate appeals, utilizing three-judge panels to vote and issue both published and unpublished opinions in cases.

DESCRIPTION OF STUDENT WORK/PROJECTS: Externs assist in researching and writing memorandums, drafting opinions, and cite-checking completed opinions. Cases arise from a variety of legal fields including, criminal law, civil litigation, and worker's compensation. Externs are also encouraged to attend oral arguments and to learn effective appellate advocacy skills for future application. Typically, externs are assigned to one of the three clerks (our chambers has a three clerk system rather than two clerks and an executive assistant) and are supervised by that person in combination with Judge Hunter Jr. Summer externs usually meet with Judge Hunter Jr. once a week, while fall and spring externs meet him bi-weekly. Feedback is given on all drafts/memorandums/cite-checking assignments.

COURSE OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES FOR STUDENT: A student extern would not need to be certified under the State Bar Student Practice Rule. We prefer rising 3Ls in the summer, but will accept rising 2Ls. Writing sample required.
