Work Description

SAS makes statistical and analytical software. The patent group at SAS is primarily responsible for (i) obtaining patents for SAS’s inventions through administrative patent prosecution at the USPTO, and (ii) defending SAS against patent lawsuits.

The externs will receive projects from several mentors who will provide guidance about the patent process from a unique in-house perspective. The externs will participate in meetings and have an opportunity to provide input on various patent issues and projects. On the patent prosecution side, they will get a chance to interact with the inventors at SAS, participate in patent harvesting sessions, learn how to effectively search for prior art, and learn techniques for preparing provisional patent applications. On the litigation side, they will learn about some of the issues that software companies handle, including the issues dealing with patent trolls and the related legislative developments. We will assign projects based on student interest and capability.

Students should have a basic understanding of patent law and some background, knowledge, or experience in computer science or related technical field.
