Work Description

This court specializes in adjudicating complex commercial litigation of the kind listed in N.C.G.S. § 7A-45.4. This involves case management, handling discovery disputes, hearing dispositive motions and drafting orders and opinions on those motions, responding to motions in limine and evidentiary objections, drafting and compiling jury instructions, overseeing jury trials and conducting bench trials, developing factual records and entering final judgments.

In order of tasks from the least to the most responsibility: cite checking opinion drafts, making substantive edits on opinions, researching discrete legal issues and drafting a summary of that research that includes application to specific facts, drafting jury instructions, attending hearings and trials, and drafting opinions. The position involves a significant amount of analysis and judgment by the extern and requires them to be actively engaged with the material and to see themselves as more than a scrivener.

Top 20% of class

Preference for Law Review and Moot Court.

Desired Class Level(s):   3Ls

6 credit students only.

Because of trial schedules students who can work on site Tuesdays and Thursdays may have a better experience.

Students should submit:    Resume, Cover Letter, Transcript & Writing Sample that has not been edited by others.

Open to students for 2 consecutive semesters.
