Work Description

Dan directs EDF’s projects to promote sustainable fisheries and the conservation of marine and coastal ecosystems in Cuba. His team helped design an island-wide network of marine parks, aimed at protecting Cuba’s remarkable coral reef ecosystems and helped the government write its first-ever National Plan of Action for Sharks and Rays. He works alongside Cuban lawyers, policy makers and conservationists to identify science-based approaches to managing natural resources and co-directs a community-based project that offers fishers and their families a more direct role in developing management programs. EDF also works with both governments to promote dialogue and cooperation on environmental matters.

The livelihoods of fishermen and residents of coastal communities depend upon the government making wise choices about how to strike the right balance between economic development and environmental protection and biodiversity conservation. Therefore, EDF is beginning to coordinate its work on MPAs, sustainable fisheries and community-based marine management with sustainability initiatives in other sectors, including agriculture, tourism, coastal development and energy. To that end, EDF is a founding member of the Research Initiative for the Sustainable Development of Cuba (RISDoC), a Cuba-US collaboration which seeks to establish a network of sustainability experts in Cuba.

The extern will likely conduct research (including comparative legal research) on one more topics relating to EDF’s ongoing work on fisheries and community-based marine management and/or its emerging work on sustainable agriculture and clean energy in Cuba. Products could include white papers, issue briefs, and/or draft legislation. Ability to read in Spanish is preferred, but not required.
