Work Description

DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION: Indigent criminal defense.

DESCRIPTION OF STUDENT WORK/PROJECTS: Assisting attorneys in court, investigation, client interviews, legal research For eligible externs, direct client representation in misdemeanor cases, including negotiating plea agreements with assistant District Attorneys, representing clients before District Court judges, and trying cases in District Court.

REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES FOR STUDENT: Certification necessary only for direct client representation. Can take up to 2 externs any semester, including summers. Ideally the student can devote at least one full day (morning and most of the afternoon) per week in Hillsborough Criminal District Court on Mondays or Thursdays; or one full day in Pittsboro Criminal District Court on Wednesdays; or one full day in Chapel Hill traffic court on Tuesdays. Students available to work only on Fridays will not have an opportunity to be in Court, but will be able to help with legal research and interviews in our office.

2L and 3L externs who will be certified under the Student Practice Rules must have taken or be taking evidence and trial advocacy.
