For North Carolina School Boards Association
DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION: The NCSBA represents the interests of all 117 local boards of education in the state. We perform numerous services for these boards, including providing training and seminars for board members; writing school board policies; lobbying for the passage of sound education legislation; updating school boards on recent caselaw and legislation; writing amicus briefs and supporting and monitoring lawsuits concerning issues that affect schools statewide; and providing self-insurance to boards and coordinating insurance defense litigation and mediation.
DESCRIPTION OF STUDENT WORK/PROJECTS:
Students would have the opportunity to work in three different areas:
- General education law-including drafting board policies, providing case law updates to local boards and research and writing on topics to be used in seminars or training;
- Legislative work-including observing legislative committees and sessions, drafting education-related legislation and providing legislative updates to local boards;
- Defense litigation-including reviewing and researching claims against school boards, assisting with mediation and settlement conferences, and assisting appointed counsel with litigation, as necessary and appropriate.
COURSE OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES FOR STUDENT: All students will need to be available for a 2-3 hour time period and will need to have good research and writing skills.
