Work Description

DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION: BCBSNC is the oldest and largest managed care company in North Carolina, and the only one based in North Carolina. BCBSNC provides health insurance to more than 3.4 million members. The Law and Regulatory Affairs Department provides legal guidance to the company and consist of the following areas of specialization Corporate Law, Corporate Contract Management, Health Plans and Litigation, Ethics and Compliance, Privacy and Security and Special Investigations.

DESCRIPTION OF STUDENT WORK/PROJECTS: Externs will work closely with various attorneys across all areas of practice. Projects may include provider contracting, regulatory compliance, employment law, analysis of legislation and proposed legislation, contract drafting and negotiation, and risk analysis. There may be opportunities to work directly with clients, including training sessions.

REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES FOR STUDENT: Student will need excellent communication skills, written and oral. Employment Law and Insurance Law would be a plus. No certification under the State Bar Practice Rule will be necessary.

NOTE: Students will be expected to complete a background check and pass a drug test prior to the beginning of the externship. Please be sure this is done BEFORE you start.
