Work Description

DESCRIPTIONS OF ORGANIZATION: Manage intellectual property of UNC-CH. Prepare, file and prosecute patent applications using outside sources. Market inventions to companies and negotiate license agreements. Also, create, recruit management, and venture capital for start-up companies.


  1. A student will assist in reviewing existing UNC-CH "standard" agreements (confidentiality, material transfer, license, option, etc.) related to intellectual property, and benchmarking the terms of those agreements against those used by UNC-peer institutions. The student will work with OTD professional staff and a University attorney to develop new standard agreements.
  2. A student will review existing legislation and case law related to algorithms, software and other copyrightable works to help OTD develop strategies for identifying, protecting and commercializing such works produced by University faculty, students and staff.

COURSE OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES FOR STUDENT: Some exposure to intellectual property law and a science/technological undergraduate degree ideally. Most important-an interest in technological management and business development. Background in chemistry and/or biology a plus. We will work with up to two externs per semester.
