Work Description

DESCRIPTIONS OF ORGANIZATION: The Office of University counsel provides legal advice to the Board of Trustees, the Chancellor, the administration, faculty, and staff on legal matters involving or affecting the institution; advises the University administration on a broad range of initiatives, policy matters, and issues; and serves as a liaison between the University and its related and affiliated entities on legal and policy issues. 6 CREDIT ONLY

The Office engages in crisis and opportunity management, including the identification of high risk activities and enterprises conducted by the University and the articulation of methodologies or strategies for coping with the risks. The office is responsible for selecting and supervising any outside counsel engaged by the institution.

DESCRIPTION OF STUDENT WORK/PROJECTS: The Office of University Counsel practices in a wide variety of areas, including athletics, civil rights, conflicts of interest, constitutional law, construction, contracts & grants, debt collection, development and gifts, employment, environmental law, health care law, insurance and tort claims, intellectual property, international issues, open meetings, public records, research compliance, student issues, and university governance.

Student work and projects will vary according to the office needs, but may include tasks such as:

  • Legal Research: research legal topics and prepare memoranda or other written documentation, as assigned.
  • Complaints and Litigation Response: assist in responses to complaints filed through internal processes (such as grievances, appeals, and administrative reviews) and/or with external agencies (such as OAH, EEOC, DOL, DOJ, OCR).
  • Committee Shadowing: attend University committee meetings with various attorneys and professional staff and assist with committee staffing needs, as requested.
  • Contract Review: assist in review of purchasing agreements, service agreements, clinical trials agreements, and sponsored research agreements.
  • Policy Development: assist in campus policy review
