Work Description

DESCRIPTION OF ORGANIZATION:   The North Carolina Court of Appeals hears all appeals from the trial tribunal and administrative agencies, except for death penalty and utility rate appeals.  Judges sit in a panel of three and hear twelve cases per court date.

DESCRIPTION OF STUDENT WORK/PROJECTS:   Externs will work under the supervision of the law clerks researching the law applicable to the appeals assigned to Judge Tyson's panels, preparing bench memorandums for pending appeals, cite-checking final opinions prior to issuance, drafting pre-opinions, and assisting my staff with daily tasks.

COURSE OR OTHER REQUIREMENTS/PREFERENCES FOR STUDENT:  (1) Preference for 2Ls or 3Ls; (2) Strong research/writing skills/experience; (3) Interest in possible clerkship or plans to practice in North Carolina; (4) Reliable schedule (minimum 4 hours per day/8 hours per week); (5) Access to laptop computer; (6) Interview required; and (7) Resume and writing sample required.
