Work Description

The NCNG office of the Staff Judge Advocate provides legal advice and counsel to commanders and soldiers within the six core legal disciplines of military justice, international and operational law, administrative and civil law, contract and fiscal law, claims, and legal assistance to facilitate state and federal missions.

Students will be assigned short term projects and at least one long term project in support of the office’s core legal functions noted above. Short term projects include: general legal research assignments, legislative history research, Army and Air National Guard regulation research, review of investigations and employment actions. Long term projects may include: surveys of state laws and federal legislation regarding any of the six core legal disciplines above, review of material produced or used by the legal assistance program, and review of materials related to the NC code of military justice.

Selected students should have completed first semester level coursework in contracts, torts, criminal law, and property as well as at least one course in legal writing and research. Previous work in client services is a plus. The student extern would not have to be certified under the State Bar Student Practice Rule.
