Mexico City is the capital and largest city of Mexico; it is also the largest city in the Americas and the world's third largest metropolitan area by population, with an estimated 21.2 million people. The city was originally built on an island of Lake Texcoco by the Aztecs in 1325 as Tenochtitlan, but was almost completely destroyed in 1521 by the Spanish conquistador, Hernán Cortés. The city is currently divided into 16 boroughs, with the Historic Center being the oldest quarter in the city, with some buildings dating back to the sixteenth century. The Historic Center and the floating gardens of Xochimilco have both been declared UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The city has over 160 museums, 100 art galleries, and the fourth highest number of theaters in the world. Universidad Iberoamericana is a private Catholic university that was founded in 1943 by the Jesuits. It has expanded to include five campuses and over 12,000 students. All classes are held in Spanish; therefore, anyone interested in studying abroad at Universidad Iberoamericana must be proficient in the language. Second and third year UNC law students take between 12-15 credit hours which are applicable toward their J.D. degree from UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law. Students are able to choose from a broad spectrum of classes to fit their particular interests. Students interested in studying at Universidad Iberoamericana should contact Director of International Programs Dr. Beverly Sizemore to set up an appointment time. Students should meet with Dr. Sizemore by mid-October for a spring semester exchange and by mid-March for a fall semester exchange.
