Nijmegen

Nijmegen is situated on the banks of the Waal, a branch of the Rhine in the region of the 'Great Rivers', and a mere 10 kilometers from the German border. Of Roman origin, the city celebrated its 2000th anniversary in 2005. This makes Nijmegen the oldest city in the Netherlands. Nijmegen was also the imperial residence during the Carolingian period. The 'Valkhof' - 'Falcon's Court' - is the highest point of the city overlooking the river. It was once the site of Charlemagne's castle. From this vantage point, which is now a scenic park, the typically Dutch polder landscape and rolling hills provide a beautiful panorama.

Apart from the rich history of the city, there are other facets that make Nijmegen well worth visiting: from attractive shops, cafes (there are a hundred different types of beer!) and restaurants to unique historic monuments; from a superb view over the busiest river of Europe to such lively traditions as the Street Theatre and the Concert Days; not to mention happenings such as the International Four Days Marches and the International Summer Festival. You can stroll along the winding streets or go shopping in the city centre. The city has a characteristically intimate atmosphere that can be experienced to advantage at the many outdoor cafes.

Radboud University Nijmegen is one of the leading academic communities in the Netherlands. Trendsetting research informs education as well as training and students have access to the very latest facilities while enjoying the pleasures of working in a beautiful green campus environment. UNC law students may take between 12-15 credit hours which are applicable toward their J.D. degree from UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law. Students are able to choose from a broad spectrum of courses to fit their particular interests. As well there is an unique opportunity for interested students to obtain an LL.M. in European Law degree while studying abroad in Nijmegen. Students should meet with Dr. Sizemore by mid-October for a spring semester exchange and by mid-March for a fall semester exchange.
