In 1999, UNC School of Law established a summer study abroad program in Sydney, Australia and in 2004, the program began operating in cooperation with Hofstra University School of Law.

Approved by the American Bar Association, the Sydney Summer Law Program concentrates on international and comparative legal issues. Courses are taught by a combination of American and Australian law faculty. Australian judges, barristers and solicitors are frequent guest lecturers. In addition to the regular courses, students take part in excursions to courts, the New South Wales Legislature and local/regional sites.

Law students in good academic standing at ABA-approved law schools who have completed their first year of studies are eligible to attend. Students enrolled in the program register for two courses, earning three semester hours credit per course for a total of six credits. 

2010 Courses:

  • Energy, the Environment, and the Global Economy- Professor James Hickey, Jr., (Hofstra. This course is just for UNC Sydney Law Program students.
  • Australian Legal Perspectives- Australian Law Faculty, primarily from University of Technology Sydney (UTS). This course is a jointly shared course with students who are in the Santa Clara and Widener summer law programs.
