In 1999, UNC School of Law established a summer study abroad program in Sydney, Australia and in 2004, the program began operating in cooperation with Hofstra University School of Law. Approved by the American Bar Association, the Sydney Summer Law Program concentrates on international and comparative legal issues. Courses are taught by a combination of American and Australian law faculty. Australian judges, barristers and solicitors are frequent guest lecturers. In addition to the regular courses, students take part in excursions to courts, the New South Wales Legislature and local/regional sites.
Law students in academic good standing at ABA-approved law schools who have completed their first year of studies are eligible to attend. Students enrolled in the program register for two courses, earning three semester hours credit per course for a total of six credits.
Housing requests are honored on a first come-first serve basis upon official enrollment in the program. Program housing is offered at Bondi Beachouse YHA.
