Allen E. Rowe, who accepted a new position as an associate with Sidley Austin LLP in Dallas, was honored with the ACLU of Southern California’s 2018 Immigrant Justice Award. Rowe was recognized for his remarkable work as part of the San Diego Latham and Watkins LLP team who co-counseled with the ACLU in the case of Marco Chavez.  Mr. Chavez, a veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, had been deported to Mexico in 2002 on the basis of a single criminal conviction.  Rowe's team convinced an immigration court to restore Mr. Chavez's lawful permanent resident status after California Governor Jerry Brown issued him a pardon.  Mr. Chavez was then able to rejoin his family in the U.S. after a 15-year absence. Russell B. Pate, of the Pate Law Firm in St. Thomas, USVI, had a $113.2 million verdict for two plaintiffs who were addicted to cigarettes as children (one from free cigarette giveaways when he was 10 years old).  Both plaintiffs died of smoking related cancers.  Their dying wishes were for their children to continue their lawsuits on their behalf and for the 400,000 people a year that were also addicted as children and die from smoking related cancers.  (Sep. 2018)

North Carolina Chief Justice Henry E. Frye was given the Leadership in the Law Award by Elon Law at a banquet in Greensboro.  Frye was the first African-American to serve as an N.C. justice, the first N.C. chief justice, and the first African-American elected to the state legislature in the 20th century, and this is the school’s highest professional award.  (Nov. 2018)

The Honorable Henry E. Frye, of Greensboro, N.C., was named to the inaugural class of the North Carolina Lawyers Weekly’s Hall of Fame, which was created to recognize senior attorneys in North Carolina who have made a significant impact on the legal profession through their career accomplishments, contributions to the profession, contributions to the bar and the commonwealth, contributions to the development of the law and their efforts to increase access to justice. The Honorable Henry E. Frye , of Greensboro, N.C., had an overpass named in his honor in Ellerbee, N.C. The Richmond County bridge overlooks the land Frye was raised on. Frye was the first African-American elected to the state House of Representatives in the 20th century and the first African-American to serve on the North Carolina Supreme Court. Governor Roy Cooper ’82 was the keynote speaker at the ceremony. Frye also had a “Bridge Builder” scholarship named in his honor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. These scholarships honor individuals whose work, advocacy and personal example helped forge a more inclusive, unified and aspirational Carolina community. (Feb. 2018)
