Citizen Lawyer Awards
Six Carolina Law alumni are among the 19 exemplary lawyers who will receive the 2014 North Carolina Bar Association (NCBA) Citizen Lawyer Awards at the NCBA Annual Meeting June 19-22 in Wilmington, N.C. Kathryn A. Deiter-Maradei ’03 (Raleigh), Sarah Zambon ’06 (Hendersonville), Brent D. Barringer ’84 (Cary), George V. Hanna III ’68 (Charlotte), Deborah K. Ross ’90 (Raleigh) and Michael G. Winters ’78 (Raleigh) will be honored.
The awards recognize lawyers who exemplify the ideals of a citizen lawyer and serve as role models who inspire other lawyers. In addition to their legal work, these N.C. lawyers serve their communities in numerous ways every day, including public service in appointed or elected positions, work with nonprofit charitable or political organizations, service in the military, and volunteering with youth sports programs or religious organizations.
A Carolina Law alumni reception will be held in conjunction with the NCBA annual meeting on Friday, June 20, at the Hilton Wilmington Riverside.

Pro Bono Board Builds Connections Between Alumni and Students

As the UNC School of Law Pro Bono Alumni Board (PBAB) marks its second year, the group continues to make great strides in connecting alumni with pro bono opportunities and with current UNC law students. During this academic year, PBAB worked to create more pro bono work for alumni while also improving the quality of pro bono at Carolina Law.
The best example of this work is the Cancer Pro Bono Project at UNC’s Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center. Alumni Board members participated in the project, working with students and patients to draft financial powers of attorney, health care powers of attorney and living wills. Read more.
Note: The Office of Public Service Programs sends out a weekly newsletter that contains information regarding public service events at the School of Law and in the community, pro bono opportunities and summer and permanent job postings.
