A Commitment to Diversity: Linda and Bill Farthing ’74 Establish $100,000 Scholarship
While Linda and Bill Farthing ’74 may not agree on the best state university in the country — he was a UNC Morehead scholar and she graduated from Penn State — they do agree on the critical importance of higher education, scholarship support and diversity. That’s why it was an easy decision for them to donate $100,000 to UNC School of Law to create the Bill and Linda Farthing Diversity Scholarship.
“I know what it’s like to not have the money to do the things you want,” Linda says. “I feel very good about us giving this money to help other people become successful. Bill and I agree that organizations with diverse workforces make better decisions.”
The Farthings believe that the cure for a lack of diversity has to start in a diverse talent pool in the law schools. “Our gift will help boost that talent pool and help law firms that recruit at Chapel Hill have the opportunity to find the best and brightest candidates who are diverse racially and economically,” Bill says. “That’s a benefit for the law firms and the school itself and is of extraordinary benefit to our society.”
