ATTENTION LAW STUDENTS

WILDLIFE CONSERVATION LAW

WRITING CONTEST

 

SPONSORED BY THE LEGAL COMMITTEE OF THE

SOUTHEASTERN ASSOCIATION OF FISH AND WILDLIFE AGENCIES (SEAFWA)*

 

The winning paper will be published in the proceedings of the 71st Annual SEAFWA Conference at the Galt House Hotel, Louisville, Kentucky October 29-November 1, 2017. The winner will receive up to $1500 to defray the cost a trip to attend the conference and present the paper.

 

Participants may select their own topic relating to Wildlife Conservation Law or choose from any of the following topics.

 

          (1) Constitutional Issues Relating to State Regulation of Hunting and Fishing

            (2) Criminal Law Issues Related to Regulation of Hunting and Fishing

            (3) State Sovereign Immunity or Liability for Damages Caused by Wildlife

            (4) Privatization of Fish and Wildlife Resources

            (5) Regulation of Exotic Wildlife, Wildlife Pets, or Wildlife Trade & Commerce

            (6) Issues of Fish and Wildlife Regulation Arising Under the Endangered Species

                 Act, Migratory Bird Treaty Act, Lacey Act, or other Federal Law.

 

Papers will be judged by a panel of members of the SEAFWA Legal Committee based on: (1) substantive content (papers are subject to a 25-page maximum of text); (2) clarity; and (3) style.

 

Students who attend an ABA-accredited law school in a SEAFWA state or who are legal residents of a SEAFWA state are eligible to submit papers no later than July 31, 2017, to:

*The Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies is an organization whose members are the state agencies primarily responsible for the management and protection of fish and wildlife resources in the 15 southeastern states, plus Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Member states are: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.
