Kilpatrick Stockton 1L Mock Trial Competition General Information

The Kilpatrick Stockton 1L Trial Competition gives students the opportunity to gain trial advocacy skills through directing and crossing witnesses, delivering opening and closing statements and making proper objections and responding to those objections. The competition is a fun and engaging way to learn skills which lawyers use everyday in the courtroom.

The Kilpatrick Stockton 1L Mock Trial Competition will be held from January 14-17, 2010 at UNC School of Law. Teams will compete in the preliminary rounds on both Thursday and Friday evenings, on one night representing one side (either defense or plaintiff/ prosecution) and on the following night, the other side. Eight teams will advance to the Quarter-Finals to be held the morning of Saturday, January 16. Four teams will advance to the Semi-Finals to be held the same afternoon. Finals will be held the afternoon of Sunday, January 17.

Teams will consist of between four and eight students, all of whom must be registered 1Ls. It's up to the students how many people to include on a team, but two must play defense counsel and two different students must play prosecution counsel. It is possible to compete with a team of four if defense counsel plays prosecution witnesses, and vice versa. Alternatively, other students might play witnesses only, so long as there are two students to play witnesses for each side. Teams will present opening statements, direct examination, cross examination, and closing arguments, as explained more thoroughly in the Competition packet.

The fee for the competition is $5 per team member. This fee is due by November 23.
