The CommunityLegalProjectis a partnership program between UNC Law and the Compass Center for Women and Families that provides clients with needed information on family or landlord/tenant law.
At the clinic, which is held each Thursday evening, student volunteers meet with clients to gather information about the client's case, conduct research, and produce a brief memo that they submit to the CLP coordinators. We send the memo to be reviewed by an attorney and have it back to the student before their follow-up appointment with the client two weeks later.
Student volunteers receive training on maintaining confidentiality, providing legal information rather than advice, and working with clients who are often at a very emotional time in their lives. It is a great opportunity for students to practice interviewing and "real world" research skills!
