1L (primarily) and 2L students: FLAS (Foreign Language and Area Studies) Fellowships are available from the U.S. Federal Government. Erica Edwards (Center for European Studies) and BethAnn Kutchma (Center for Global Initiatives) will present information about FLAS academic year and FLAS summer language fellowships. These fellowships are to encourage Americans to learn less common languages, though professional students have more leeway and French, sometimes Spanish, and a few other more common languages are also allowed. If you have an interest in, and a propensity for, the learning of languages and can see a future career utilizing the combination of such language capabilities with your legal career, especially if it might be with the U.S. federal government, then please come hear the details from these two FLAS Coordinators, representing the Title VI Centers at UNC who award FLAS Fellowships. Prior law students have been awarded both academic year (full tuition/fees, health insurance & stipend) and summer FLAS awards (overseas six-week+ language study) in a variety of languages: French, Portuguese, Arabic, Kiswahili, Chinese, and Korean--there are other languages available also. Deadline for applications is in February. Come see if this is something for you.
