Resume & Cover Letter Reviews

The CDO offers resume and cover letter reviews via e-mail over the summer and during the school year if our afternoon walk-in hours (Monday - Friday from 2 - 4 p.m.) do not fit with your schedule. Here are a few basic steps to request a review of your resume or cover letter:

  1. Send your documents no less than three business days prior to any deadlines you may have. This three-business-day window is necessary due to the volume of requests we receive and our desire to provide students with a substantive and comprehensive review. We strongly encourage students to submit materials as early as possible so as to avoid the last-minute rush.
  2. Review the section on Resumes and Cover Letters in the Career Development Handbook before submitting documents for critique. Most frequently asked questions will be answered in this chapter. If you still have specific questions or concerns about your documents, please mention them in your request.
  3. Submit only one sample of your resume and cover letter for review. We expect that students will make relatively minor changes when sending resumes and cover letters to different employers, so only one sample of each should be submitted for email review.
  4. E-mail your documents in Microsoft Word format directly to a CDO counselor or to lawcareers@unc.edu . If sending to the main CDO address, in the body of the email, answer the following questions to assist the CDO in assigning your documents to the most appropriate counselor:
    • For what types of positions are you applying?
    • In what geographic areas are you focusing your job search?
    • Have you ever worked with a counselor in the CDO? If so, with whom?

To meet with a counselor in person regarding resume and cover letter improvements, please either schedule an appointment or participate in our walk-in hours during the academic year.
