In 2003, the Greensboro News & Record surveyed the top 50 North Carolina public companies based on market capitalization and found that only 10.1% of the board members were female and only 5.3% were non-white.The Director Diversity Initiative is an effort based at the School of Law, and supported by a grant from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation and the Fullfilling the Dream Fund North Carolina Consortium, to work with North Carolina-based companies to increase diversity on their boards of directors along gender, racial and ethnic lines.

One aspect of the Initiative is to help identify and train potential diverse directors and to maintain a database of qualified diverse director candidates. The goal of the May 19 program is to raise awareness of potential diverse board candidates of the skills needed to be a director, the time commitments, the changing landscape, and to provide some realistic approaches to advancing their candidacy.

Space at this program is limited and applications must be accompanied by a current resume that includes current job title and responsibilities, current service on boards (including volunteer and non-profit organizations), and a statement of why you would like to attend the program including the value you believe you would bring to a board.
