Broadening Corporate Board Diversity: Earning a Board Seat

Since 2006, we have hosted this program at the Rizzo Conference Center in Chapel Hill, NC.

The Director Diversity Initiative is an effort based at the School of Law, and supported by a grant from the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation and the Fullfilling the Dream Fund North Carolina Consortium, to work with North Carolina-based companies to increase diversity on their boards of directors along gender, racial and ethnic lines. As of September 30, 2009, 12.3% of the board members of the 50 largest North Carolina public companies were females and 7.1% of the board members were minorities.

One aspect of the Initiative is to help identify and train potential diverse directors and to maintain a database of qualified diverse director candidates. The goal of the program is to raise awareness of potential diverse board candidates of the skills needed to be a director, the time commitments, the changing landscape, and to provide some realistic approaches to advancing their candidacy.

Space at this program is limited and applications must be accompanied by a current resume that includes current job title and responsibilities, current service on boards (including volunteer and non-profit organizations), and a statement of why you would like to attend the program including the value you believe you would bring to a board.
