The Center for Integrating Research and Action (CIRA) began as a small-scale project in the Department of Anthropology at UNC-Chapel Hill.  It has since developed into a network of researchers in Geography, Cultural Studies and Education, as well as anthropologists from a variety of institutions in the U.S. and Mexico.  Its mission is to foster social change through collaborations between researchers and communities in order to promote social justice,  sustainable development and participatory democracy.

Among other projects, CIRA is currently engaged in a multi-year partnership between community organizers and university researchers to explore ways to ameliorate malnutrition, food scarcity, the existence of "food deserts," land loss, the extinction of the small farmer and more through sustainable farming techniques, new approaches to marketing agricultural products and the development of innovative programs to enrich rural communities in North Carolina and Appalachia.
