Augsburg University Summer Law Program
Program in European and International Economic Law
June 23 - August 1, 2008
In 2004, the School of Law established an exchange program with Augsburg University in Bavaria, Germany. The University of Augsburg has offered summer programs to German practicing lawyers and postgraduate law students since 1996. In the summer of 2005, Augsburg opened up the program to foreign students.
UNC law students will have the unique opportunity to take summer classes with both foreign law students and law students from other schools around the United States. Since 2005, the summer program's student body has included German graduate students, students from France, Armenia, the United States, South Africa, and elsewhere. Partner universities with the Augsburg program are: UNC; Chicago-Kent College of Law; George Washington University; Pepperdine University; and University of Johannesburg, RSA.
The courses are taught in English by an international faculty. UNC law students may take a maximum of six credit hours. Most courses are worth one to two credits. Please see the university link below for detailed course information. Classes are held Monday - Thursday with Fridays off so students can travel.
The schedule is not fixed yet (1/31/08), though it is in in final phase, and will be very similar to that of 2007.
The extracurricular activities will be similar to those in 2007 with several weekends (dates TBA) organized for local/regional travel organized by the German exchange students with minimal costs.
2008 Program Costs (Tentative - not yet approved as of 1/31/08):
By virtue of this program being an "exchange program" between the University of Augsburg and UNC School of Law, UNC students attending the program will be registered at UNC and will pay UNC tuition and fees associated with summer school courses, as if taking summer school courses here. Rates are per credit hour.
2008 Tuition and Fees:
-
In-state tuition and fees are $275/credit ($1,650 for 6 credits)
-
Out-of-state is $520/credit ($3,120 for 6 credits)
Housing: One option available this summer are the two apartments reserved for UNC students. One apartment is for up to 4 students (1750 Euros per month for the apartment). It has two bedrooms. The second apartment is for up to 3 students (1550 Euros per month for the apt.) with one bedroom with two beds and a sleeping bed in the living room. If students want to find different housing, you are welcome to do so. Oftentimes, the German exchange students who will be coming to UNC in the following fall semester help with such arrangements.
