Bernard A. Burk

Bernie Burk joined the UNC School of Law faculty this summer following a distinguished career at Howard Rice Nemerovski Canady Falk & Rabkin, P.C. in San Francisco and a year as an academic fellow at the Arthur and Toni Rembi Rock Center for Corporate Governance at Stanford University. He is the co-author of Big But Brittle: Economic Perspectives on the Future of the Law Firm in the New Economy, which was recently published in the Columbia Business Law Review. Burk received his undergraduate degree at Yale University and his J.D. from Stanford University.

David B. Fountain

David Fountain is the Vice President of the Legal Department of Progress Energy headquartered in Raleigh, NC. Fountain joined the Legal Department in April 2000 and supported the merger between Carolina Power and Light Company and Florida Progress Corporation which formed Progress Energy in November 2000. Prior to joining Progress Energy, Fountain was an associate attorney in the Charlotte, NC office of the predecessor firm to McGuire Woods from 1994 to 2000. He specializes in commercial transactions, mergers, acquisitions and electric utility regulation. Fountain is a Morehead-Cain Scholar with undergraduate, M.B.A., and J.D. degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Douglas R. Gunson

Doug Gunson is the General Counsel of the Charlotte-based Nucor Corporation, the largest producer of steel in the United States. At this Fortune 200 company, he oversees the legal function and works in in the areas of corporate, international trade, and international investment. Gunson received his undergraduate and law degrees from Brigham Young University.

Matthew T. Martens

Matt Martens is Chief Litigation Counsel of the Division of Enforcement of the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, where he manages the SEC's litigation program as conducted in the Washington headquarters trial unit and coordinates the activities of the trial attorneys across the enforcement program in the eleven regional offices. Martens served as a law clerk for Judge David Sentelle of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, and then-Chief Justice William Rehnquist of the Supreme Court of the United States. He practiced law with Lathan & Watkins LLP before becoming Chief of Staff to Assistant Attorney General Michael Chertoff in the Criminal Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. He then worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Western District of North Carolina, rising to the Deputy Criminal Chief where he supervised prosecutors in the white-collar crime unit and was Coordinator of Corporate and Securities Fraud. Martens received his undergraduate degree from Cedarville College and his law degree from the University of North Carolina School of Law.

Valecia M. McDowell

Valecia McDowell is a member of Moore & Van Allen and practices in the firm's Charlotte office. She works in commercial litigation and has extensive experience conducting internal investigations for publicly-traded, privately-held and non-profit institutions. McDowell is a member of the Board of Directors for the Charlotte Chamber of Commerce, the Council for Children's Rights, and the Community Building Initiative. She has also been recognized as a "Future Star" and "Rising Star" by various legal publications. She is a Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America. McDowell received her undergraduate and law degrees from Duke University.

Edward P. O'Keefe

Ed O'Keefe is General Counsel, Chief Legal Officer, and a member of the Executive Committee of Bank of America. He leads a global department of over 1100 attorneys in 40 U.S. and 20 international cities that manages the bank's legal affairs and legal risks. Before becoming the bank's General Counsel, Ed served as head of litigation, global compliance and operational risk executive, senior privacy executive, and deputy general counsel for staff support. Prior to joining Bank of America in 2004, he served as Managing Director for Deutsche Bank, attorney at Chase Manhattan (former Chemical Bank), and in private practice. Ed received a B.S. from the University of Rhode Island and his law degree from Fordham University School of Law.

Reid L. Phillips

Reid Phillips is a partner in the Greensboro office of Brooks, Pierce, McLendon, Humphrey & Leonard LLP, where he represents clients in commercial litigation in federal and state courts with experience in contracts, securities, antitrust, and other areas. He is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers and has been recognized as a "Super Lawyer," and a member of the "Legal Elite" in litigation. Phillips received his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his JD degree from the University of Texas.

Elliot M. Silverstein

Elliot Silverstein is the Co-Director of Psychological Services at the Child Outpatient clinic on the Dorothea Dix Campus of Central Regional Hospital. He also holds adjunct appointments in the UNC Medical, Law, and Business Schools. At the Law School, Silverstein teaches two courses: Interviewing and Counseling; and Negotiation. He serves as Co-Chair for the Professional Affairs and Ethics Committee of the North Carolina Psychological Association. He has designed and given numerous presentations on Ethics and Risk management, including a biennial ethics workshop at Duke University Medical Center. Silverstein earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Pennsylvania, his JD from Harvard Law School, and a Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Martha F. Simpson

Martha Simpson is a licensed psychologist and clinical addiction specialist. She is in private practice with HRC Behavioral Health & Psychiatry, PA in Raleigh, where she has a general adult practice, with specialties in substance abuse, pain management, chronic illness, and impaired professionals. She previously practiced in San Diego and split her time between private practice and teaching at UCSD Medical School and the California School of Professional Psychology. She worked in Greensboro with Guilford Pain Management, PA, until she moved to Raleigh to join HRC. Simpson received her doctorate in psychology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Kurt E. Wolfe

Kurt Wolfe practices in the Government, Regulatory and Criminal Investigations Department of McGuireWoods LLP in Washington, DC. He has participated in a number of internal investigations undertaken by corporate clients and has participated in the defense of financial institutions, broker-dealers, accounting firms, and corporate executives in investigations conducted by the SEC, the Department of Justice, FINRA, and court appointed receivers in actions involving securities fraud, insider trading, and Ponzi scheme allegations. Wolfe has written several articles about the SEC's whistleblower program under Dodd-Frank. Wolfe received his undergraduate degree from James Madison University, his law degree from the University of Richmond School of Law, and an LL.M. from The London School of Economics and Political Science.
