Andy Swanson served six years in the army and earned the rank of Staff Sergeant. By the end of his enlistment, he had deployed to Kosovo, Afghanistan, and Iraq; he participated in Operation Northern Delay, one of the largest combat jumps since World War II.

After teaching two semesters of English at Rockingham Community College, he pursued and earned his MFA at Boston University, studying under Leslie Epstein, Ha Jin, and Sigrid Nunez. While there, he taught undergraduate creative writing at BU, as well as a high school creative writing course at Boston Arts Academy.

He is married to the love of his life, Missy Swanson, with whom he has three wonderful children: Elliot, Violet, and Oliver.
