Blakey is a native of Beattyville, Kentucky, and grew up in Ohio. He was in private practice in Columbus, Ohio, from 1967 to 1971. From 1969 to 1971 he also served as a teaching fellow at Harvard Law School. He joined the UNC School of Law faculty in 1971. He has written and lectured widely on evidence and trial advocacy, and served as a consultant to the committees that drafted the North Carolina Rules of Evidence. He teaches contracts, evidence, alternate dispute resolution, interviewing, counseling and negotiation.
