Scott Childs joined the Kathrine R. Everett Law Library at the University of North Carolina as the assistant director of public services in 2001 before becoming the deputy director in 2007. He taught first-year legal research and various online legal research seminars at Cornell and Louisiana State University before coordinating the advanced legal research and advanced legal research and writing courses at UNC. He has been active in national and regional law library associations and has published in the area of legal research and associated services.

After earning his J.D. at the University of Alabama, Childs practiced law with the Legal Services Corporation of Alabama, serving first as a staff attorney and then as senior staff attorney. Upon completion of his master of library science degree, he served as a law reference librarian and later as head of collection development at the Cornell Law School Library before becoming Head of Reference at the Paul M. Hebert Law Center Library at Louisiana State University.
