Loewy was a senior editor for the Boston University Law Review and received the Law School's academic achievement award for obtaining the top academic average in his graduating class. He became a member of the Connecticut Bar in 1966. Loewy was an assistant professor at the University of Connecticut Law School from 1964 to 1968. He was an associate professor at UNC-Chapel Hill School of Law from 1968 to 1973 and has been a full professor since 1973. He became a Graham Kenan Professor in 1991. He publishes and teaches in criminal law, criminal procedure, and constitutional law.
