From 1983 - 2000, Stern maintained an education law and medical negligence litigation practice with the North Carolina civil rights law firm of Ferguson, Stein, Wallas, Adkins, Gresham and Sumter. In August, 2000, Stern opened his own law office in Durham, North Carolina, dedicated to the practice of education law and to advocacy teaching and training. In addition to handling cases for members of the North Carolina Association of Educators, Stern trains National Education Association staff across the country in advocacy skills.
