Civil Rights Law Course Number: Law 299 Hours: 3 Course Type: Upper-Level Writing Requirement: None Skills Requirement?: No Final Exam?: No Description: This course surveys civil rights laws with a particular focus on federal statutes prohibiting discrimination. We will critically analyze questions regarding notions of "minority" status, what constitutes discrimination, and competing views of the role of government to ensure equal rights for all. We will examine prohibitions against discrimination across different contexts, including rights against discrimination in education, the criminal justice system, public accommodations and housing, employment, and marriage rights. Within these contexts, we will also compare and contrast protections for different groups, including racial minorities, language minorities and immigrants, women, and members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) communities.
