Criminal Lawyering Process

The Criminal Lawyering Process course, offered in the fall semester in conjunction with the clinic, focuses on North Carolina juvenile law and procedure in order to prepare students for and support them during their clinic work. Simulation exercises are used to teach the range of skills involved in juvenile practice. The course presents for discussion and written reflection and analysis various ethical, strategic and systemic issues that arise in the cases in which the students are involved. Students will be required to complete advocacy-related written assignments each week on a variety of topics, including case planning, motions, and disposition.

NOTE: All students MUST ATTEND a mandatory two day-long intensive session in September. Dates will be announced later but will not conflict with the Trial Ad intensive session.

Criminal Procedure-Investigation and Evidence must be taken prior to the Fall semester of your 3rd year. Trial Advocacy must be taken either prior to or during the Fall semester of your 3rd year. Criminal Procedure: Adjudication is strongly recommended.
