This course covers Eighth Amendment constitutional principles, federal habeas corpus statutes, and United States Supreme Court practice in capital cases. By studying cases that are actually pending in the Supreme Court, attending a Supreme Court argument, and writing their own "opinions" addressing actual cases and controversies, students gain real-time perspective on the workings of and interactions between the branches of state and federal government.
