This introductory health law course focuses on the law governing the provider-patient relationship, mechanisms for assuring quality of health care, and legal issues that implicate bioethics. Topics may include informed consent, formation and termination of medical treatment relationships, the duty to treat, medical confidentiality, death and dying and end-of-life care, emerging technologies, medical research, and organ donation and transplantation. The course also surveys legal regulation of health care quality, such as medical malpractice, accreditation, and professional licensure.
