Intellectual Property

Conley section: This is a survey course; an overview of the five areas: unfair competition, trademark, trade secret, copyright, patent. It is recommended for students planning a general practice or for a career in Intellectual Property.

Chin section: Although the law of intellectual property has historically been deeply intertwined with commerce, trade, technology, culture, and the human condition, recent technological, economic and cultural changes have dramatically elevated its significance. Modern intellectual property law includes such diverse topics as trademarks, trade secrets, patents and copyrights. This course provides a broad introduction to these substantive areas and to the legal reasoning skills involved in intellectual property counseling and litigation that will benefit students whether or not they choose to pursue more specialized offerings. No prior technical background or knowledge is required or expected.
