The seminar will explore the legal and constitutional history of the south in the years leading into Civil War.   We focus on how private property and slavery shaped the culture of the south and vice versa.  The readings will include work on private law, such as property, contracts, and trusts and estates, as well as constitutional law, political theory, and literature.  After about six weeks of reading and discussion, the course will turn to preparation of major papers and presentations by students on their papers.
