This course will help students understand how mental illness and psychopathology interface with the legal system and the criminal justice system. There will be an overview of interviewing techniques, psychopathology and assessment (including the use of standardized assessments and psychological testing) in conducting forensic evaluations and discussion of the use of mental health experts. Specific areas of focus will include competency to stand trial, competency restoration, criminal responsibility, risk assessment, sentencing, the death penalty, correctional psychiatry, evaluation and management of sexual offenders and juvenile forensic issues.
