Description:
This course explores the ways in which the law constructs and regulates sexuality. The course will be organized into six units: (1) theories of sexuality, (2) criminalization of sexual activity, (3) protections against discrimination, (4) family issues such as marriage and alternatives to marriage, (5) the relationship between sexuality and free speech, and (6) international and comparative perspectives on sexuality rights. In exploring these subjects, the class pays particular attention to how legal regulations affect the lives of sexual minorities including-but not limited to-lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, transgender persons, and intersex persons. Readings include cases from the United States and abroad, legal scholarship, and works from other academic disciplines.
