The Center on Poverty, Work and Opportunity hosted the conference "Access to Justice in North Carolina: A Right to Counsel in Civil Cases" at UNC School of Law on Fri., Oct. 30, 2009. Participants included numerous state leaders, and audio from the event is available online at iTunes U (requires iTunes).

Conference participants addressed the issue of access to the courts in civil cases. The center notes that an estimated 80 percent of low-income people cannot afford to pay an attorney and cannot obtain representation by a publicly funded lawyer or one willing to work pro bono (at a free or reduced rate). The center convened the conference to help the state take steps to address this issue.

Participants included:

  • Justices from the North Carolina Supreme Court including Chief Justice Sarah Parker and Associate Justices Robin Hudson, Mark Martin and Patricia Timmons-Goodson
  • Past and current presidents of the North Carolina Bar Association - Janet Ward Black, Charles Becton and John Wester
  • Allan Head, executive director, N.C. Bar Association
  • John McMillan, president, N.C. State Bar
  • George Hausen, executive director, Legal Aid of N.C.
  • Kenneth Schorr, executive director, Legal Services of the Southern Piedmont
  • Burton Craige, past president, N.C. Advocates for Justice
  • Robert Orr, executive director, North Carolina Institute for Constitutional Law
