UNC School of Law Professor Tamar Birckhead talked about juvenile justice with Frank Stasio, host of The State of Things (WUNC - NPR) on July 18. Also involved in the panel discussion were Marcia Morey, a juvenile court judge; David Vandevusse, a juvenile court psychologist; Rep. Alice Bordsen (D - Alamance), and Mosi Secret, a reporter at the Independent Weekly.
During the hour-long conversation, the panel discussed how North Carolina is one of only two states that automatically prosecutes 16- and 17-year-old criminal offenders as adults and whether taking a tough approach on adolescents in the state's legal system is working and/or appropriate.
