About the Pro Bono Newsletter

The mission of the UNC School of Law Pro Bono Program is to increase the provision of high quality, low-cost legal services to North Carolina residents in need by empowering lawyers to accept more pro bono cases and creating a life-long commitment to pro bono work among UNC Law students. This newsletter supports our mission by providing current students with a comprehensive list of ways to get involved in Pro Bono work while still a student at UNC Law, as well as offering context for the good work our students do through news and information.

Attorney-Sponsored Projects

Immigrants' Rights Research

This is a project open to only 2Ls and 3Ls through the North Carolina Justice Center. The student volunteer will research the extent to which HB 318, recently passed by the NC General Assembly, will affect the rights of immigrants and others in NC. In particular, the student will be investigating what agencies and individuals will be required to comply with the law’s restrictions on the types of identifications that can be presented in order to access services. This project is remote, and requires only a ten hour total time commitment.

Florida Death Penalty Research Project

This is a project through the ACLU Capital Punishment Project. This project is to find every decision of the Florida Supreme Court where the Court has found a death sentence disproportionate under its proportionality review, to save the cases for the ACLU legal team, and to create a brief legal memo citing and summarizing each of the cases. This project is a great way to get a writing sample! The project is remote, and requires only a fifteen-hour total time commitment.

Charter Schools in North Carolina

This is a project open only to 3Ls through the North Carolina Justice Center. This project involves researching recent N.C. legislation and its impact on new charter schools in the state. The student’s research will inform the N.C. Justice Center’s advocacy strategy on this issue.
