Equal Justice Works Career Fair Info Session

Attention 2Ls and 3Ls
interested in public interest employment! This info session will discuss the
Equal Justice Works Career Fair and registration process. Students who attended
the fair last year will be there to talk about their experiences. Registration
for the fair is now open and the deadline to submit resumes to employers is
September 13. If you are a 3L attending the mandatory fall externship orientation during this time, please contact Adrienne Allison for program handouts.
USDOJ Info Session on Honors and Summer Law Intern Programs

Assistant U.S. Attorney
Banu Rangarajan will be presenting information to interested 2Ls and 3Ls on the
US Department of Justice's Attorney General's Honors Program (post-graduate)
and Summer Law Intern Program. The application deadline for both programs is
September 4th. This presentation is a great opportunity to learn about the ins
and outs of the DOJ application process, for this year or next. For general

National Lawyers Guild Legal Observers Training

Other Public Interest Opportunities
Workers' Rights Conference
The Peggy Browning
Fund will be holding its annual National Law Students Workers' Rights
Conference on October 12-13, 2012 at the National Labor College near Baltimore,
Maryland. For more information and a registration form, see the Fund's website.
UNC Law may select up to three students to attend the conference. For one UNC
Law student, the Peggy Browning Fund will cover the conference fee (above the
$25 registration), as well as on-site meals and lodging expenses. Students
interested in attending should have a demonstrated interest in either workers'
rights issues or public interest law. If you are interested in attending the conference,
please contact Dean Novinsky no later than Friday, August 31.
Consider Serving as a Public Interest Peer Mentor!
The School of Law offers a Public Interest Peer Mentor Program that matches first-year students interested in public interest work with like-minded second- and third-year students. Students are matched up based on practice areas of interest, among other factors.
Mentors meet with their mentees on an individual basis throughout
the year and serve as a resource to help with the transition to law
school, share experiences and answer questions about public interest
careers. The program also schedules a variety of group social activities
each year, including the Annual Chili Dinner, brown bag lunches, a
spring picnic and other events.
Upperclass students interested in serving as public interest peer mentors should fill out the
Public Interest Peer Mentor application
and return it to Adrienne Allison by Friday,
September 7.
Current Pro Bono Opportunities
Projects are posted on the Pro Bono Board near the mailboxes and are listed online at http://www.law.unc.edu/studentlife/probono/projects/. Students can sign up for projects on the Pro Bono Board or email UNCProBonoProjects@gmail.com.
Wills for Heroes Project
The Young Lawyer's Division of the North Carolina Bar Association is seeking law students to assist in ther upcoming Wills for Heroes event in Rocky Mount. The project will be conducted on Saturday, September 8th from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Rocky Mount, NC. Students may choose to attend the morning session from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the afternoon session from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., or both. Participants will have the opportunity to assist attorneys in drafting wills and powers of attorney for local first responders. This is a fantastic opportunity to log pro bono hours and to network with North Carolina attorneys. If you are interested, please register online.

PSLawNet is becoming PSJD!
PSLawNet is the premier career center and jobs database for
law students and lawyers on public service career paths. On August 27,
PSLawNet will become PSJD,
a redesigned
website that retains all of PSLawNet's content but that adds easier
navigation,
enhanced searching, and new tools for job-seekers and employers alike.
PSLawNet
users will be able to log in to PSJD with existing PSLawNet login
credentials, and the job-seeker "email alerts" will continue
uninterrupted.

Read reflections from this year's Public Defender Advocacy, Hiring, and Training Conference. The conference occurs every summer, so look for information about it spring editions of the this newsletter as well as the CSO
newsletter. Interested students are also invited to visit the CSO to talk more about applications for
public defender positions.
