February Pro Bono Update

The Pro Bono Program and Pro Bono Alumni Board (PBAB) have been very active this February. Students participated in Pro Bono Week, crafted valentines for attorneys doing pro bono, and signed up for Spring Break projects and trips. PBAB helped plan Pro Bono Week events and held its first board meeting of 2014.

As always, if you would like any additional information about the program or the photographs you see here, please feel free to visit our website. Thank you for your continued interest in the Pro Bono Program!

Sincerely,

Kelly Anderson
Pro Bono Program Alumni Coordinator

Richard M. Wiggins Name and Year of Graduation from UNC Law: Richard M. Wiggins, Class of 1958

Place of Employment: McCoy, Wiggins, Cleveland, and O’Connor, PLLC

Area of Practice: Litigation

Favorite class/professor in law school: My favorite professor was Albert Coates, who taught criminal law. He was a funny guy.

Pro Bono Experience in Law School: We did not really have clinics or a pro bono program when I was in law school.

What inspired or prompted you to start doing pro bono work? When I left law school there was no real help for disadvantaged people in civil matters in Cumberland County, and probably not in the state. I got involved with a pro bono project of the county bar association and became its first chairman. We hired a legal secretary and formed a list of lawyers in Cumberland County who were willing to take on cases on a rotating basis. I chaired that project for four or five years. Later it was taken over by Legal Aid.

Pro Bono Week

During Pro Bono week, the student Pro Bono Board focused on showing UNC Law students how much we appreciate the time, effort, and enthusiasm they bring to pro bono year-round. The week's events included: (1) homemade cookies for pro bono participants; (2) a Food Truck Rodeo; (3) the Group Projects Fair; (4) an alumni panel; and (5) the "Ask An Alum" event, at which students were able to individually meet with PBAB members to discuss ways of highlighting pro bono work in job interviews and the importance of pro bono experience in future careers.
