J. Phillips Little Johnston authored the book "True South: Leadership Lessons from Polar Extremes" about the race to be the first to reach the South Pole. The book was featured in The High Point Enterprise and on the front page of McDowell News. Allison Reid, Assistant Dean for Communications, wrote the following review of Johnston's book: "It was with immediate and keen interest that I read Phil Johnston's True South. To learn leadership lessons and history lessons simultaneously was not only an efficient use of my time — surely an advantage both of the highlighted explorers would endorse —it was also a great joy. The window that Johnston opens to the hearts and minds of the early twentieth-century explorers is fascinating and reads much like fiction at times, but his ability to tie in the successes and failures of Antarctic explorers Amundsen and Scott with the idea of universal leadership skills that are essential in today's professional life was a clear bonus. Ideas like avoiding what he calls "groupthink" and the importance of strategic planning are brought to life by the story that unfolds as the two explorers race to the South Pole. I'm a great fan of books like Nathaniel Philbreck's In the Heart of the Sea, and True South has much the same style and substance, with all the excitement and tragedy that polar exploration can bring. To weave into that strong narrative a comprehensive comparison of leadership approaches is icing on the cake — it's like Nathaniel Philbreck meets Steven Covey." (Jan. 2015)

Set in North Carolina and points west, BYRD is the fragmented family history of a child given up for adoption. Jill McCorkle says of the book, "Brilliant writing - lively and heartbreaking at every turn." Ron Rash calls it "a riveting debut." Church's writing honors include fellowships from the North Carolina Arts Council. A former partner at Tharrington Smith in Raleigh, she now divides her time between writing and law. BYRD was awarded the Crook's Corner Book Prize for best debut novel set in the American South. "At its root, BYRD is about heartbreak, loss, and being lonely," said author Randall Kenan, the judge for this year's prize. "The triumph here is that Kim Church's remarkable skill turns these dark human realities into the stuff of praise song, and plain song, and blues song. It made me shout and holler. What a truly lyrical achievement in prose." The literary prize was established as a collaboration between Crook's Corner, the iconic Southern restaurant in Chapel Hill, N.C., and the Crook's Corner Book Prize Foundation. Crook's Corner may be the only restaurant in the United States now awarding a literary prize. "It's an idea that we flat-out stole from the French," said foundation president Anna Hayes, explaining that the inspiration came from the long-established tradition of prestigious literary awards given by such famous Parisian cafes as Deux Magots and Cafe de Flore. "The French have always understood the link between food and literature, and the connection between cafes and creativity." (Jan. 2015)
